Hong Kong's Best Prepaid Plans
Introduction
Hong Kong, the international financial and transportation hub, has one of the most competitive telecommunications markets in the world. There are in total 4 mobile network operators (3 HK, CMHK, CSL, and Smartone), and numerous Mobile virtual network operators in this city of 7 million people.
Whether you are an employee of a local company, an international student, or simply a tourist, may be having a hard time choosing the right prepaid mobile plan out of so many choices available. In this article, I am going to recommend what I think are some of the best prepaid mobile plans in Hong Kong.
1. Club SIM
Club SIM is a prepaid service introduced by CSL and runs on its network. Upon signing up for an eSIM or a physical SIM card, you can purchase contract-free data/minute add-ons as you wish. One of the best combos is called Game Easy Data, if you purchased this add-on for HK$50, you won't be charged for data when playing selected games. What's more, you can spend your airtime credit in Hong Kong App Store!
Your number has a one-year's validity when activated. To keep your number, all you need to do is recharge your number or buy an add-on every 365 days.
Visit https://www.clubsim.com.hk to buy a Club SIM and don't forget to use your ID to register your number otherwise you won't work in Hong Kong.
2. 3 HK DIY Prepaid Card
Similar to Club SIM, 3 HK offers a service called Bill-to-3, which allows you to use your airtime credit on App Store purchases.
3. SoSIM
Introduced by 3 HK and Watsons Group. You can buy one at the cashiers at any Watson's or ParkNShop stores.
4. Haha SIM
Introduced by 3 HK and Fortress, most suitable for frequent travelers.
5. MySIM
MySIM is introduced by CMHK, the Hong Kong subsidiary of Chinese telco tycoon China Mobile. There are 2 kinds of MySIMs available, one is $38 and the other is $48.
If you don't have an eSIM-compatible device, and you need to use mobile services right away, MySIM would be your top choice. Unlike SoSIM and Haha SIM, which require you to present at the store to buy one otherwise expensive shipping fees will be charged. And unlike 3 HK DIY Prepaid SIM card, which is sent by standard stamped letters, a MySIM SIM card can either be collected via a CMHK store or SF smart lockers. You can basically pick up the SIM card any time you want.
And there is one more thing you should know, CMHK's identity verification system approves your valid document in real-time, and you can literally start using the SIM card in just like 5 minutes.
6. Birdie Mobile
Birdie Mobile should be one of the most student-friendly telecom companies in all of Hong Kong. It provides a contract-free student prepaid plan at only $1 for the first month and $68 onwards. You can port out your number to another operator, and you can cancel the plan anytime you want.
